Veteran-trusted since 1947. Proudly serving those who serve.
University of Maryland University College commemorated its 70th anniversary this year. In 1947, the idea of veterans going to college was just beginning to emerge. But that changed once UMUC joined hands with the Department of Defense to bridge the gap between bricks-and-mortal schools and the soldiers, sailors, and airmen protecting us. We proudly brought the classroom to the military, serving those who serve where they serve.
The UMUC overseas initiative inspired a revolution in higher education. From dispersed locations in Europe and then Asia and the Pacific; from war zones in Vietnam and Iraq, and now Afghanistan, servicemembers have broadened their education, and enriched their lives and careers, through their partnership with UMUC.
As UMUC looks ahead, we treasure this long-standing partnership and how, from day one, we have innovated and evolved. UMUC President Javier Miyares notes that by embracing change, we ensure “sustainable future success.” UMUC stands at the forefront of online and distance learning, of hybrid courses meeting in the classroom and in virtual space, and of leveraging data to assess how students learn best.
Our culture of innovation currently inspires more than 50,000 servicemembers, veterans, and family members who attend UMUC from more than 140 locations worldwide. Shared trust between UMUC and the military community has been a hallmark from the start, as a number of awards and affiliations attest.
